Energy Saving Challenge in your dorm: Who's taking the lead?

Status December 2022

Germersheim is ahead, Godramsteinerstraße in Landau is weakening
Germersheim is ahead, Godramsteinerstraße in Landau is weakening
Sure November was colder than October!
Sure it was darker for longer!
Of course you had to sit at your desk longer than in October!

That's why it's no wonder that you all consistently consumed more energy in November than in October. Anything else would be an energy-saving miracle, and we didn't expect one at all.

We compared the consumption of all halls of residence at all locations in October and November with each other, calculated a percentage average of the change per capita and then assessed how many percent you are away from this average with your halls of residence. And then a very clear, albeit preliminary, picture emerges.

In November, the dormitory in Germersheim was ahead in terms of energy savings - albeit by a narrow margin - followed closely by Bebelstraße in Worms and Heinigstraße in Ludwigshafen. The halls of residence in Landau are not doing so well and, with the exception of Maximilianstraße, have all moved away from the halls of residence average. And let's be honest - Godramsteinerstraße dormitory - you can do better...????

Here are all the energy-saving values for the average dormitory:
  • Germersheim - at the university: -21.35%
  • Ludwigshafen - Henigstraße: - 18.66%
  • Worms - Bebelstraße: -18.81%
  • Landau - Maximilianstraße: -3.8%
  • Worms - Erenburger / Hochheimerstrasse: +2.5%
  • Landau - Quartier Vauban: +10.86%
  • Landau - Godramsteinerstrasse: +21.35%

But don't worry. November was the first month of comparison and the race is sure to get much tighter. Stay tuned, because even if you don't win in the end, you are playing against your own utility bill. And that's where you can all only win.

In any case, we are pleased that we are receiving so many good energy-saving ideas and that we are getting positive feedback from the halls of residence about the Challenge.
Let's move on to the next round and have a great pre-Christmas season. Keep sending your December ideas to

The winner of the ideas competition for the month of November has been announced!

It's really great that you sent us so many ideas.

The second monthly prize of 75 euros goes to our dormitory in Heinigstraße in Lugwigshafen. A simple idea with a big effect. Thanks to this idea, we were able to fix a fault in the dormitory's heating system and save a lot of energy.

Stay tuned in December and send us your ideas to, the next monthly prize is waiting for you.

Join your dorm's energy-saving challenge...

... and win a dorm party.

From October 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023, all dormitories of the Studierendenwerk and all 971 tenants in Landau, Germersheim, Ludwigshafen and Worms will compete against each other in an "Energy Saving Challenge".

Energy is rapidly becoming more expensive, and unfortunately the Studierendenwerk will have to pass on the energy costs to you as a tenant in the future. To save your own money and to keep energy affordable, there is only one sensible way: SAVE ENERGY!

So: Saving energy makes ecological, economic and social sense in order to conserve our resources. This should be incentive enough for you to actively participate in our challenge.

And this is how it works:
  1. Inform yourself about sensible, energy-saving behavior. Good tips can be found here.
  2. Be energy conscious and turn off the lights, turn off the heat when ventilating, unplug your standby appliances, etc. pp....
  3. Help others in the dorm with energy saving behaviors as well. Saving energy starts with everyone, but only works together!
  4. Let us know at if you notice any very obvious energy waste in the shared spaces of the dorm.
  5. Share your ideas with us at if you think of something to save energy. We'll invite the best four ideas to a month of free dining hall credit. (75 euros credit on your student ID card). We'll give away one top-up each month.
  6. We will evaluate the kilowatt consumption per capita in all dormitories every month starting in October and give you the current status of the challenge every four weeks. Either via email, here on this page, and on our social media channels.

Who wins the thing.
The winner will be the dorm that has saved the most kilowatt hours per capita, on a percentage basis, over the four-month period beginning in October 2022.

And the prize?
The prize for the winning dorm in the Challenge is a party for the entire dorm. You and your dorm will determine the location and time together starting in February 2023.
